ABOUT SHIFT-X PROJECT
The SHIFT-X project: ‘Employing cultural heritage as promoter in the economic and social transition of old-industrial regions’ was commenced in October 2012 and shall be finished in December 2014. SHIFT-X is initiated by six Central European regions and towns with strongindustrial past. The project supports them in entering their post-industrial era. For that purpose, the regions have teamed up with two scientific institutions renowned for their expertise in regional development and heritage preservation. The eight partners jointly develop, test and disseminate innovative approacheson how industrial culture can be used for fostering economic development as well as for changing perception and social settings. The project focuses on three areas of intervention:
- improving cultural management structures for industrial heritage;
- innovating heritage-based products;
- changing perception of old-industrial places.
Main activities comprise exchange of experience, elaboration of concepts and their implementation, collaborative and individual PR work.

Our Heritage is gold.
With that statement, a mobile art studio and exhibition was touring through Europe this summer. A PR container, painted in gold, is an eye-catcher and a temporary home for artist Jonny Vekemans www.lightpaintings.be and his team. Through an old and simple camera obscura photography technique, he inspires residents of cities in the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Germany and Belgium to rediscover their industrial heritage. The 'industrial heritage = gold' tour is a promotional campaign of the SHIFT-X project that ignites the awareness of the importance of the European industrial heritage. At every stop during the tour, local inhabitants add their photographs to the expo. During the final conference of the project, on October 15th, the complete exhibition can be seen in C-mine in Belgium (Genk).
